Motivation
My project is experience driven. I wanted to focus on emotional expression through in-depth concepts that are displayed through typographic creativity. Typography is the driving force in a lot of my projects. Creating this book was a very immersive and intricate process, one that has pushed me to study the importance of storytelling in design.
Visually, the treatment of typography is a journey. One that becomes highly expressive and communicates different emotions through the movement of words. Apart from the typical use of figures of speech, I’m using ‘figures of design’ to convey the emotional properties of light and darkness.
Significance
The book serves to create a relationship between readers and the text. The project takes a multidimensional approach to design storytelling, one that directly engages the audience’s imagination in a highly personal and insightful way.
As people read my written words, the interaction acts like a conversation between myself and the reader. I utilize white space throughout the book and animation to mimic breathing room, in order to prompt readers to think and respond.
This project is significant because I'm bringing the complexity of emotions to the foreground and displaying it in a way that encourages conversations about the importance of emotional awareness and growth.
Final Visual/Design Approach
I made one book with 15 poems. The significance of having 15 poems comes from the initial inspiration for the project, John 1:5. The book is black and white holding only typography and texture. This way, readers focus on the content as they symbolically enter my mind. This idea is enhanced by the typeface and texture, it gives a more personal and vulnerable feel. On the other hand, the animation is a colourful expression of the project as it introduces viewers to the topic and sets the stage for the poems.
